Context

The ALL ACT Loss & Damage (L&D) Research Observatory is at the forefront of addressing the critical and urgent challenges posed by climate change, focusing on both economic and non-economic losses and damages. As we witness the escalating impacts of climate change globally, the need for innovative research and effective policy solutions has never been more pressing. The Research Observatory aims to bridge knowledge gaps, foster a collaborative research community, and generate actionable insights for practical solutions to tackle loss and damage, with a focus on vulnerable communities at the frontline of climate impacts.

Establishing a Research Steering Committee

To guide this ambitious initiative, the Observatory is establishing a dedicated 'Research Steering Committee' that will oversee the strategic direction of the Observatory, select research initiatives to be supported and ensure alignment with current and evolving needs and priorities in the field of loss and damage. This committee will play a critical role in shaping the impact of the Observatory, guiding research efforts and facilitating policy advocacy and informed dialogue.

The Observatory invites senior experts from universities, reputed think tanks, and research institutions from Global South, who are deeply engaged with climate change research and policy, and possess the following capabilities and qualities to join this distinguished committee.

  • A strong background in climate change, environmental studies, social sciences, or related fields.

  • Experience in conducting or supervising research related to climate change, especially in the context of loss and damage.

  • A demonstrated commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary research, and a track record of leadership in academic or policy-oriented projects.

  • A vision for advancing the understanding of climate change impacts and developing practical solutions to mitigate loss and damage, especially in vulnerable communities.

  • A robust background in climate change, environmental studies, social sciences, or related disciplines.

  • A clear vision for advancing understanding of climate change impacts and formulating practical solutions to address loss and damage, especially in vulnerable communities.

The Observatory encourages individuals with strong networks, influence, and institutional support from the Global South, particularly from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), to join the Steering Committee as it seeks to expand this LDC- and SIDS-led initiative that fosters collaboration and supports research and solutions based on the practical realities of communities on the frontlines of climate impacts.

Role and Impact of the Steering Committee

In addition to shaping the research priorities of the Observatory, the Steering Committee will

  • Ensure that the Observatory addresses the most urgent and significant aspects of loss and damage due to climate change.

  • Promote a LDCs and SIDS-led collaborative approach by facilitating the development of South-South-North community of practitioners, enhancing global cooperation, and sharing of knowledge and expertise.

  • Influence policy and practice through the generation and dissemination of research findings, contributing to more effective loss and damage risk reduction approaches, and financing options.

  • Support and facilitate a peer review network aimed at generating high-quality research capable of influencing policy discourse at both national and international levels, including contributions to high-impact journals and evidence synthesis for bodies like the IPCC.

  • Mentor and guide emerging researchers, enhancing capacity, and strengthening the global research community's ability to tackle climate change challenges effectively.
