Overview

Dr Islam is a Senior Research Fellow at Ocean Policy Research Institute, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan. He is also Advisor of two university namely, Royal University Dhaka and Dr Momtaz Begum Science and Technology University. Prior to this, he served as a development expert and researcher in various organizations, including the National Bureau of Asian Research, Washington, DC; Independent University, Bangladesh; BRAC, Islamic Relief Bangladesh, and Transparency International Bangladesh. Dr Islam conferred a PhD in Community Development under the prestigious Yayasan Khazanah Scholarship. Dr Islam was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship for Post-doctoral research at Northeastern University, Boston USA.

Lead and manager the Ocean Policy Transformative Advancement and Leadership Development project of OPRI-SPF (Total fund is 300 million yen). In addition as a vice director of OPRI responsible to coordinate OPRI-SPF global projects and strategies and planning. Concurrently lead multiple research and high-level policy advocacy on the mangrove restoration project, plastic pollution research, port and connectivity research; sustainable disaster recovery and climate change adaptation project and Rohingya Refugee research and advocacy project in the Bay of Bengal in the Indi-Pacific region. Coordinator to host the United Nations Ocean Decade Fifth Foundation Dialogue in May 2025, in Osaka, Japan and 2nd Blue economy conference in the January 2025 Bangladesh.
