Seeking resilient livelihoods: a pathway to address climate-related loss and damage in Turkana County, Kenya
Turkana
County in Kenya is experiencing more frequent climatic extremes, such as
droughts and fash foods, which threaten the sustainability of the area’s
development as they impact negatively on pastoral livelihoods. These effects
of climate change — in combination with other local vulnerabilities like
poverty and lack of access to basic services — have increased competition and
conficts over limited resources. They have pushed rural communities to
migrate to urban areas, where social vices such as alcoholism and
prostitution have risen as ways of coping with stress and depression. Future
effects of climate change will lead to additional economic and non-economic
loss and damage in the area. Therefore, it is necessary to provide support to
help communities to build resilience to minimise and address climate losses
and damages.
