Description: In the traditional Sri Lankan society, craft making from renewable supplies, particularly rush and reed weaving, plays a key role in rural economies and symbolizes significant intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Climate change has severely impacted this tradition, leading to a reduction in rush and reed plant species populations, alterations in their morphology and growing conditions, and increased competition from other plant species. These environmental changes disrupt the entire craft making process, from material collection to the drying and dyeing of fibers, compromising the quality and availability of raw materials. Economically, these shifts have escalated production costs, undermined market competitiveness, and reduced incomes, particularly affecting rural women and marginalized communities, deepening poverty. Socially, the continuity of weaving societies is threatened, and cultural impacts include the replacement of natural crafts with synthetic products and a diminishing of the associated folk literature. These multi-faceted impacts constitute significant non-economic and economic losses, threatening both the livelihoods and cultural basis of vulnerable communities.

My responsibilities span teaching, research, and outreach mainly in the field of sustainable community development. I teach subjects such as community development, development communication, and project management at the higher education level. My research approach is primarily mixed-method and field-based, conducted both independently and in collaboration with undergraduates and fellow scholars. In outreach, I focus on engaging rural farming communities and other stakeholders involved in community development, tailoring programs to diverse groups including adults, youth, women, and the disabled. These efforts aim to directly impact and enhance community resilience and development

This study investigated the role of livelihood capital in influencing rice farmers' adoption of climate change adaptation strategies using the sustainable livelihood framework. The study found that farmers’ livelihood capitals play a key role in adopting adaptation strategies to cope with climate change. Rice farming households should be encouraged to invest in human, natural, and physical capital to adopt adaptation strategies and improve their adaptability to climate change.

This study investigated how farmers perceive climate change, the strategies they adopt, and the factors that influence climate change adaptation by smallholder dairy cattle farmers. Cattle farmers perceived climate change as a decrease in rainfall and an increase in temperature that negatively impact livestock, natural resources, and the community. Farmers' prominent adaptation strategies were increasing the availability of drinking water, providing shade, and bathing the animals. Farmer's education level, farming experience, number of dairy animals, and ownership of agricultural productive assets have a positive significant influence on climate adaptation decisions.

The study examined perceived impacts, vulnerabilities, and resilience of rice farming households in highly climate vulnerable rice production regions of Anuradhapura district. The resilience to climate change was significantly influenced by the farmer's education level, credit access, household income, and the availability of non-farm income sources. Some factors, such as credit access influenced all aspects, while others significantly influenced one or two aspect/s. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive strategy that takes into account all the influencing factors in addressing climate change for smallholder rice farmers in the Anuradhapura district.

This chapter explores agrarian communities' challenges and adaptive strategies, explicitly focusing on rice farmers in the dry zone of Sri Lanka in the face of a changing climate. The chapter uses the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) as a conceptual lens to highlight the interplay of various livelihood assets, including human, natural, social, financial, and physical assets, in shaping resilience and sustainability.

This chapter reviews qualitative data collection methods in agricultural research. A bibliometric analysis of 628 studies from Scopus, focusing on interviews, focus group discussions, observations, narratives, and surveys, reveals a steady increase in their use since 2005. A total of 413 journals published research using these methods. Key thematic areas are climate change, gender, food security, sustainability, and adaptability. Applying a combination of qualitative methods has enhanced the validity and reliability of research, thereby improving publication quality. The findings highlight the essential role of these methods in addressing complex agricultural issues and promoting a holistic approach for sustainable solutions.
